8. AI Agent Security

TL;DR: Implement specific security controls for AI agents according to OWASP Agentic Top 10 2026, including technical guardrails, sandboxing, and behavior monitoring.

Estimated time: 30-45 minutes

Required level: Advanced

Prerequisites

  • [ ] Sections 1-5 completed
  • [ ] OpenClaw running with systemd
  • [ ] Familiarity with AI security concepts

Objectives

By the end of this section you will have:

  • Understanding of OWASP Agentic Top 10 2026
  • Technical guardrails implemented (not just suggestions)
  • Additional sandboxing with AppArmor
  • Anomalous behavior monitoring
  • Incident response procedure

Security frameworks

OWASP Agentic Top 10 2026

The OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications 2026 identifies the main security risks in AI agent systems.

NIST AI Agent Standards Initiative (February 2026)

The NIST launched in February 2026 the "AI Agent Standards Initiative" to establish interoperability and security standards for AI agent frameworks. This guide aligns with its core principles:

  • Agent identity and authentication (implemented via Tailscale ACLs)
  • Execution isolation (implemented via sandbox + systemd)
  • Action auditability (implemented via auditd + logging)
  • Human control over critical actions (implemented via human-in-the-loop)

Summary of risks and mitigations

# Risk Description Mitigation in this guide
AA1 Agentic Injection Malicious prompts that manipulate the agent Input validation, guardrails
AA2 Sensitive Data Exposure Secret leakage in outputs Output filtering, SecretRef
AA3 Improper Output Handling Unsanitized outputs executed Sanitization, skill allowlist
AA4 Excessive Agency Agent with too many permissions Least privilege principle
AA5 Tool Misuse Improper use of tools Skills with strict allowlist
AA6 Insecure Memory Compromised persistent memory Isolated, encrypted memory
AA7 Insufficient Identity Lack of authentication in APIs Tailscale ACLs, Gateway TLS pairing
AA8 Unsafe Agentic Actions Irreversible actions without confirmation Human-in-the-loop
AA9 Poor Multi-Agent Security Insecure communication between agents N/A (single agent)
AA10 Missing Audit Logs Lack of traceability Auditd, openclaw security audit

Recent threats: ClawHub and ClawJacked

ClawHub Supply Chain Attack (February 2026)

The largest supply chain attack against AI agents

1,184+ malicious skills (~20% of the ClawHub registry) were discovered distributing malware. See section 5 for full details.

Mitigations implemented in this guide:

  • Sandbox mode "all" containerizes all tool execution
  • Skills allowlist restricts which tools the agent can use
  • openclaw security audit detects compromised skills

ClawJacked (WebSocket hijacking)

Vulnerability that allows malicious websites to hijack local OpenClaw agents by sending commands via WebSocket to the Gateway.

Mitigations:

  • gateway.host: "127.0.0.1" -- Gateway only accessible on loopback
  • gateway.tls.pairing: true -- Connections authenticated with TLS pairing
  • Access via Tailscale eliminates Gateway exposure to the local network

AA1: Protection against Agentic Injection

Agentic injection occurs when malicious inputs manipulate the agent's behavior.

Implement input validation

Create a validation module:

    - github_token
    - email
    - credit_card
    - private_key
  log_redactions: true
  block_if_contains_secrets: false # true = block response completely

AA6: Protect agent memory

The agent's persistent memory may contain sensitive data from previous conversations.

Configure secure memory storage

# Add to config/settings.yaml (create if needed)

memory:
  enabled: true
  storage_path: "/home/openclaw/openclaw/workspace/.memory"

  # --- Memory security (OWASP AA6) ---
  security:
    # Encrypt memory at rest
    encrypt_at_rest: true
    encryption_key_env: "MEMORY_ENCRYPTION_KEY"

    # Limit retention
    max_entries: 1000
    retention_days: 30

    # Don't store sensitive data
    exclude_patterns:
      - "api[_-]?key"
      - "password"
      - "secret"
      - "token"
      - "credential"

    # Clear memory on restart (optional, more secure)
    clear_on_restart: false

Generate encryption key

# Generate encryption key for memory
MEMORY_KEY=$(openssl rand -base64 32)

# Add to env file (root-owned, loaded by systemd)
echo "MEMORY_ENCRYPTION_KEY=$MEMORY_KEY" | sudo tee -a /etc/openclaw/env > /dev/null

# Verify permissions
sudo chmod 600 /etc/openclaw/env
sudo chown root:openclaw /etc/openclaw/env

Manual memory cleanup

If you need to clear the agent's memory (for example, after processing sensitive data):

# Backup before clearing
cp -r ~/openclaw/workspace/.memory ~/openclaw/workspace/.memory.backup.$(date +%Y%m%d)

# Clear memory
rm -rf ~/openclaw/workspace/.memory/*

# Restart service
sudo systemctl restart openclaw

Verify no sensitive data in memory

# Search for possible secrets in memory files
grep -rE "(sk-|api[_-]?key|password|secret)" ~/openclaw/workspace/.memory/ 2>/dev/null

# If anything is found, clear and review exclusion configuration

AA4/AA5: Principle of least privilege

Verify skill configuration

The skill configuration in config/skills.json (create if needed, or use the tools section in openclaw.json) implements the principle of least privilege.

Run this verification:

# Verify that shell is disabled
# Use config/skills.json if you created it, or check openclaw.json
cat ~/openclaw/config/skills.json | grep -A2 '"shell"'

# Verify HTTP allowlist
cat ~/openclaw/config/skills.json | grep -A10 '"http_client"'

# Verify allowed filesystem paths
cat ~/openclaw/config/skills.json | grep -A5 '"allowed_paths"'

Create permission verification script

nano ~/openclaw/scripts/verify_permissions.sh
#!/bin/bash
# OpenClaw permission verification
# Run periodically or after configuration changes

echo "============================================"
echo "PERMISSION VERIFICATION - OPENCLAW"
echo "============================================"

Additional sandboxing with AppArmor

AppArmor provides an additional layer of kernel-level sandboxing.

Create AppArmor profile

sudo nano /etc/apparmor.d/usr.local.bin.openclaw

Adapt paths to your installation

The paths in this profile must match your actual installation. Run which openclaw and ls -la ~/.openclaw to verify.

#include <tunables/global>

# NOTE: Adjust the binary path according to your installation (which openclaw)
profile openclaw /home/openclaw/.local/bin/openclaw flags=(complain) {
  #include <abstractions/base>
  #include <abstractions/nameservice>
  #include <abstractions/openssl>

  # Node.js runtime (adjust according to your installation)
  /usr/bin/node rix,
  /home/openclaw/.nvm/**/node rix,
  /home/openclaw/.local/bin/openclaw rix,
  /usr/lib/node_modules/** r,
  /home/openclaw/.nvm/** r,

  # OpenClaw configuration directory
  /home/openclaw/.openclaw/** r,
  /home/openclaw/.openclaw/workspace/** rw,

  # This guide's working directory
  /home/openclaw/openclaw/** r,
  /home/openclaw/openclaw/workspace/** rw,
  /home/openclaw/openclaw/logs/** rw,

  # Configuration (read-only)
  /home/openclaw/.openclaw/openclaw.json r,
  /etc/openclaw/env r,

  # Deny access to sensitive paths
  deny /home/openclaw/.ssh/** rwx,
  deny /home/openclaw/.bash_history rwx,
  deny /home/openclaw/.gnupg/** rwx,
  deny /etc/shadow r,
  deny /etc/passwd w,

  # Network (limited to localhost by systemd, this is defense in depth)
  network inet stream,
  network inet6 stream,

  # Signals
  signal (receive) peer=unconfined,

  # Proc filesystem (needed for Node.js)
  /proc/*/status r,
  /proc/sys/kernel/random/uuid r,

  # Tmp for Node.js
  /tmp/** rw,
}

Activate profile

# Load profile in complain mode (only logs violations)
sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.local.bin.openclaw

# View status
sudo aa-status | grep openclaw

Complain mode vs enforce

  • complain: Only logs violations (recommended initially)
  • enforce: Actively blocks violations

Once verified that there are no false positives, switch to enforce:

sudo aa-enforce /etc/apparmor.d/usr.local.bin.openclaw

AA10: Complete logging for auditing

Verify logging configuration

# Verify that auditd is capturing events
sudo auditctl -l | grep openclaw

# Verify recent logs
sudo ausearch -k openclaw_changes -ts recent

# View application logs
tail -50 ~/openclaw/logs/openclaw.log

Configure log retention

sudo nano /etc/logrotate.d/openclaw
/home/openclaw/openclaw/logs/*.log {
    daily
    missingok
    rotate 30
    compress
    delaycompress
    notifempty
    create 640 openclaw openclaw
    sharedscripts
    postrotate
        systemctl reload openclaw > /dev/null 2>&1 || true
    endscript
}

Incident response

Containment procedure

If you detect anomalous agent behavior:

# 1. STOP THE SERVICE IMMEDIATELY
sudo systemctl stop openclaw

# 2. Preserve evidence (before any changes)
mkdir -p ~/incident_$(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S)
cp -r ~/openclaw/logs ~/incident_*/
sudo cp /var/log/audit/audit.log ~/incident_*/
cp ~/openclaw/config/* ~/incident_*/

# 3. Verify file integrity
sudo aide --check > ~/incident_*/aide_report.txt

# 4. Review active network connections
ss -tp > ~/incident_*/network_connections.txt

# 5. Review processes
ps auxf > ~/incident_*/processes.txt

# 6. Temporarily block network (optional, extreme)
# sudo ufw deny out to any

Post-incident analysis

# Review audit logs
sudo ausearch -k openclaw_changes -i

# Review application logs
grep -E "(error|warning|alert)" ~/openclaw/logs/openclaw.log

# Review security alerts
cat ~/openclaw/logs/security_alerts.log

# Search for modified files
find ~/openclaw -mtime -1 -type f -ls

Recovery

# 1. Restore configuration from backup
cp ~/backups/config_backup/* ~/openclaw/config/

# 2. Rotate API keys (MANDATORY after incident)
# - Go to each provider and generate new keys
# - Update /etc/openclaw/env
# - Revoke the old keys

# 3. Verify integrity before restarting
sudo aide --check

# 4. Restart service
sudo systemctl start openclaw

# 5. Monitor intensively for the first hours
tail -f ~/openclaw/logs/openclaw.log
tail -f ~/openclaw/logs/security_alerts.log
